Twelve artists in Ogygia
mgrm

Ogygia is an artist-run international residency and exhibition organised as part of MILKSHAKE the project, a four-part multimedia event focusing on the queer body in a local context and Lily Agius gallery who will be hosting the exhibition of works from Wednesday 17th October till the 26th October 2012.

Twelve young artists from eleven different countries were invited to live and work alongside one another in Malta for a ten-day period, creating original works inspired by the myth of Calypso from Homer's Odyssey; traditionally associated with Gozo.

The participants are Thomas Apostolou (Greece), Barbora Brezakova (Slovak Republic), Emily Bruton (Ireland), George Eynaud (Malta), Katerina Georgopoulou (Greece), Manuel Godhino (Portugal), Alzbeta Jaresova (Czech Repulic), Sanna Jarl-Hansson (Sweden), Monika Kita (Poland), Daniel James Lackey (UK), Arianna Marinelli (Italy) and Ruyi Wong (Singapore).

The mythological theme serves as a device through which wider-ranging implications of gender, sex and identity could be accessed in a broader and more subjective manner. A discourse could then be formulated around the current issues and contradictions surrounding the queer body and alternative sexuality on this small, pre-dominantly catholic island. In this way, a timeless story becomes the catalyst for new and surprising interpretations while being integrated within a purely contemporary context.

The ten day residency does not only promote intercultural dialogue but it also contributes to give new life, a new interpretation of the Odyssey through the eyes and hands of young artists working in a diverse range of alternate approaches including digital media, photography, video, sculpture, performance and painting.

The exhibition was made possible thanks to the Malta Arts Fund and Marsovin wines.
