I Am Pride!

I Am Pride! is the theme for this year's Pride Week which will be celebrated between the 4th and 13th of July 2011. This year's activities feature an LGBT Film Festival, the WomenSpace event, the Pride March and a Seminar on the Legal Recognition of Same Sex Couples organised in collaboration with the US Embassy.

I Am Pride! is a recognition of the progress that LGBT individuals have made in acknowledging and celebrating their diverse identities and an assertion of our right to equality in all spheres of life.  We are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and are no longer willing to hide our identities or to live in shame. Ten years on from the birth of the Malta Gay Rights Movement we can, with confidence, demand for recognition of our partners and the families we create, for the right of transgender persons to healthcare, the right to have their preferred gender identity recognised, and the right to marry without the necessity of sterilisation, annulment, or divorce.

The Pride March will take place on Saturday 9th July at 10.30am starting off from St Georges Square in Valletta and will feature brief performances by Glen Vella and Alex Vella Gregory. All those, straight or gay, wishing to express support for the LGBT community in Malta and around the world are welcome to participate in the march.

The LGBT Film Festival features three films entitled BearCity, My Friend from Faro and The Secret Diaries of Anne Lister on the 4th, 5th and 7th July respectively. All films will be screened at St James Cavalier at 9.00pm. Messages from President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and Archbishop Gene Robinson delivered as part of the It Gets Better Campaign will be shown before each film.

WomenSpace is an event exclusively by women for women and will take place on Wednesday 13th July at the Tal-Ferħa Estate in Għargħur from 8.00pm onwards. It will feature a number of performers from the local music scene.

In view of the proposed Cohabitation Bill soon to be presented by Government, the MGRM, in collaboration with the US Embassy, is organising a seminar on the Legal Recognition of Same Sex Couples. This will take place on Friday 8th July between 6pm and 9pm at Europe House in Valletta. Speakers include Martin Bugelli, Head of the EU Representation Office in Malta, Richard Mills, Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy, Dr Neil Falzon, a Human Rights Lawyer, and representatives of PN, PL and AD. A Video Conference Link will also be held with Jennifer Pfizer, Legal Director and The Arnold D. Kassoy Senior Scholar of Law at the Williams Institute.

The LGBT community and the general public are all invited to participate in these events. For further information please contact MGRM on 9925 5559 or visit our website at www.maltagayrights.org.
