Pride Week 2012 - 30th June to 7th July
I am is the theme for Pride Week 2012 which will be celebrated between the 30th June and the 7th of July. It is meant to remind everyone that LGBT individuals are part of society - just people, everywhere, living their lives and being themselves. The only difference being that LGBT people still have to fight for rights that other people take for granted.. safe streets and schools, acceptance from parents, being treated equally in employment, recognition of our relationships and families, free healthcare.
This year's activities feature the Pride March, an LGBT Film Festival and the WomenSpace event organised by MGRM, a football tournament organised by We Are and a Pride Party being organised by Station2Station.
The Pride March will take place on Saturday 30th June gathering at 10.30am next to the family monument in Sliema and walking towards Bisazza Steet, ending up in St Anne Square and will feature brief performances by Glen Vella, Chiara and Amber as well as DJ Fireman. The US Ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley, Minister Chris Said, MP Evarist Bartolo and AD Chairperson Michael Briguglio have stated that they will be joining the March, which is open to all those, straight or gay, wishing to express support for the LGBT community in Malta and around the world.
The LGBT Film Festival features three films entitled Get Real, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Bloomington on the 2nd, 3rd and 6th July respectively. All films will be screened at St James Cavalier at 9.00pm.
WomenSpace is an event exclusively by women for women and will take place on Wednesday 4th July at the Tal-Ferħa Estate in Għargħur from 8.00pm onwards. It will feature a number of performers from the local music scene.
The Football tournament will take place on Thursday 5th July and the Pride Party on the 7th July at Gianpula. The LGBT community and the general public are all invited to participate in these events.
