MGRM is one of six organisations who will form part of the LGBT Consultative Council. The representatives will start of by discussing their proposals for a Civil Union Bill. Minister Helena Dalli aims to present the Bill in parliament by June of this year which will hopefully provide for the legal recognition of same-sex couples and their families by the end of this year.
Other organisations involved include aditus Foundation, LGBT Labour, Drachma, Drachma Parents and We Are. A number of individuals have also been nominated to form part of the council which will be chaired by Cyrus Engerer and will also comprise representatives from the Ministry for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties.
This is the first time that LGBT groups will have a regular forum where issues of concern can be discussed and raised with government. MGRM has a number of legislative goals including the introduction of a new gender identity bill that would facilitate the recognition of transgender persons, access to reproductive rights and the transposition of newly adopted directives on asylum and the rights of crime victims.
The MGRM will also be working with other Ministries, such as Education and Employment, Home Affairs and Justice and Health to discuss other policy issues such as a comprehensive action plan for addressing LGBT issues in education, the depathologisation of trans persons, the training of the police and the situation of trans prisoners.
